You may be noticing that you are not even able to get one hot shower in before you are noticing that the water is becoming luke warm. This is a sure sign that the hot water tank should be replaced. You may be noticing that you are running out of hot water a lot sooner then usual. For example, if you were able to run the dishwasher, a load of laundry and take a shower without running out of water but notice that you are only able to run the dishwasher and are freezing in the shower you may want to consider replacing the tank. This issue is very common in older tanks (8 years and older). These hot water tanks are no longer able to keep up with the demands of the household and simply become inefficient.

This point may not be as obvious as some of the other points but it is still worth considering. If your tank has lasted well beyond it’s life expectancy then you should be considering replacing it sooner rather than later. When it comes to replacing a hot water tank it is better to be proactive rather than reactive and having to deal with water all over your basement floor.

Eventually, hot water tanks will begin to show their age. If you are noticing rust or corrosion build up around the water tank this is a sign that you should be replacing it. Hot water tanks are designed to withstand rust for their entire life span, but if your tank is well past it’s prime rust and corrosion are inevitable.
